What remediation actually involves

Most inaccessible PDFs are not missing a setting — they are missing structure. A visually correct page can carry no tags at all, or tags that describe a reading order no sighted designer intended. Remediation means rebuilding that structure so the file conveys the same document to a screen reader that it conveys to the eye.

That covers headings and their levels, paragraph and list semantics, table headers with correct scope, figure alternatives, artifacting of decorative furniture, link and form-field labelling, document language, title metadata and bookmarks.

Sharing source files with NIMAS work

If you are already sending us print PDFs for NIMAS production, we use the same files. There is no second submission and no second round of alt-text approval — the descriptions authored for the fileset carry across.

What you get back

A remediated file, and a conformance report for each product so your buyers have something to evaluate. Where a source file cannot reach full conformance without redesign, we say so plainly and describe what would be required, rather than issuing a report that overstates the result.

The process, step by step

1. Same source files We use the PDFs already supplied, so there is nothing extra to send.
2. We remediate the document Structure, reading order, alternatives, tables and metadata are corrected.
3. We report on it You receive a conformance report per product in a standard VPAT format.
